Hi, I'm Matthew Rosenberg.

Serial entrepreneur, thinker, mentor, and always… product designer at heart.

I take products from 0 to 1: from concept to execution, to eventual exit.

My superpower: bringing great people together in service of one ambitious goal. I’ve been building apps since the very first days of the App Store, founding companies of my own and shepherding them through acquisition, and helping others take flight by matching cutting-edge technology with my unique sensibility on design and function.

My work has been awarded by Apple, and covered by everyone from The New York Times to Esquire.

My career has taken me from New York to Los Angeles and now Austin, always in search of inspiration, beauty, and learning from others.

I bring this ethos to my work, which focuses on bringing people together in amazing new ways, from building one of the world’s first group messaging apps to one of its first VR workspaces. From building the iPhone’s first collaborative video editor, to my most recent role bringing folks together around one table.

Where others wear dress shoes, I’ve always worn sneakers. I love working in the trenches with talented teams to help them operate and deliver at the highest level.

Because even after earning millions of downloads, it’s these moments of construction, together that still inspire me most.

Virtual Collaboration

Whiteboard was envisioned as a next-generation visual collaboration tool for VR, designed to make remote teamwork feel as cohesive and interactive as being in the same room. It combined a VR software app, a mobile app, and a cloud network to allow team members, regardless of their physical location, to collaborate around an infinite virtual whiteboard. This platform supported dynamic interaction with multimedia content and provided a seamless integration between virtual and mobile interfaces. Whiteboard aimed to transform the remote collaboration landscape by leveraging VR to enhance the natural and intuitive interaction among team members.

Imagining a UX for VR from the ground up

In developing Whiteboard, our ideal scenario involved eliminating controllers altogether in favor of intuitive hand tracking, allowing users to interact with the VR environment as naturally as in the real world. However, the technology at the time—and arguably still today—did not fully support this vision, necessitating the use of controllers for more precise interactions. This situation underscored the broader challenge in VR development: the lack of a definitive standards for UI/UX design. As a result, our approach had to be experimental, adapting to current technologies while exploring innovative ways to integrate natural user interactions within the constraints of existing hardware.

Creating VR experiences means thinking about architecture

Envisioning the virtual room for Whiteboard was a creatively rich and technically challenging process. We aimed to design a space that was not only functional but also inspiring, where remote teams could feel genuinely connected and engaged. Inspired by diverse environments, from planetariums to cinematic and gaming scenarios, we chose a design that placed users at the center, allowing equal access and visibility to all content and participants. This central, equidistant design helped minimize physical movement and maximize interaction, addressing both the psychological and practical aspects of collaboration in a virtual environment.

Multiplayer Beta

In the multiplayer beta version of Whiteboard, we successfully implemented a virtual environment where two users could collaborate in real-time, manipulating media and sharing ideas as if they were in the same physical space. This prototype demonstrated the potential of VR for enhancing collaborative efforts across distances, with participants interacting through a mix of hand tracking and controllers. However, the test also made it evident that the hardware technology of the time was not yet adequate for widespread commercial deployment. Issues like limited processing power, connectivity, and user comfort revealed that VR technology still needed significant advancements before becoming a viable platform for startup ventures in the enterprise space.

Cinematic Themes

With Cameo, we revolutionized mobile video editing by creating cutting-edge themes that transformed user-generated content into cinematic experiences. These themes featured advanced elements such as motion intros and outros, sophisticated color grading, and stylish text options. Unique to our approach was the use of cloud-based rendering, which, at the time, set Cameo apart by allowing complex video processing that mobile devices alone couldn’t handle. Additionally, each theme concluded with a distinct motion graphic Cameo, adding a personalized touch that varied with each theme.
